Government has tabled plans to fence the country’s major highways to reduce road traffic accidents caused by stray animals. Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Dr Obert Mpofu told The Herald that commercial farmers were integral to the plan’s success.“The erection of fences programme is part of the road rehabilitation process whereby we want to make our country a better place as we will be working with various stakeholders to achieve that status,” he said.

“The programme has already received endorsement from the relevant authorities.  Under the plan, all commercial farmers along the country’s major roads will be compelled to erect fences,” he said.

Dr Mpofu said the ministry would work with local authorities to educate the nation on the need to preserve infrastructure and to desist from vandalism so that the fences would not be destroyed.

The World Bank has approved a US$1,3 million grant to Zimbabwe for development of the transport sector master plan.
