Three Harare men who smashed the windows of a car in Warren Park 1 and stole property, were yesterday sentenced to an effective eight months each in jail.

Blessing Chinembiri (28), Tatenda Mutsavi (28) and Edward Chigodora (26) all from Warren Park, Harare, appeared before Mbare magistrate Mr Stanford Mambanje charged with theft.

They admitted to the charge and Mr Mambanje sentenced them to 12 months behind bars each.

He, however, suspended three months on condition of good behaviour.

Another month was suspended for each of them on condition they restitute $100 to Against Verewa.

The prosecutor Mr Lawrence Gangarahwe implored the court for “a short and sharp” custodial sentence, saying that the three committed a serious offence which was prevalent.

“Although these three are first offenders, the State feels that smashing and stealing from a car is a very serious offence,” he said.

“This offence was premeditated and they committed it out of greed and not out of need as all three are landlords who have a decent living.”

Mr Gangarahwe said it was the duty of the courts to punish the perpetrators harshly to deter would be offenders.

Facts were that on Tuesday at around 3am, the trio broke the rear right quarter glass and the front right window of Verewa’s car which was parked outside her house.

They took away a cardboard box which contained two pairs of jumper cables worth $100 and various documents.

Verewa received information that Chinembiri was selling jumper cables and when she quizzed him he confessed to having stolen them and implicated Mutsavi and Chigodora.

The matter was reported to the police leading to the arrest of the trio.
