A policeman in Masvingo allegedly teamed up with three accomplices and hijacked a taxi and went on a drinking spree before dumping the vehicle.

Delight Chibaya (29), who is based at Masvingo Central police station and his unemployed colleagues Donald Chibaya (33), Webster Zingoni (24) and Sikhumbuzo Mukaka (20) all of Rujeko C suburb in Masvingo allegedly severely assaulted a taxi driver Darlington Gowera before fleeing with his taxi.

The quintet have since appeared before Masvingo magistrate Mr Takawira Mugabe facing robbery charges.

Mr Mugabe remanded the four in custody to September 27 and advised them to apply for bail at the High Court.

Allegations against the four are that on September 10 this year, they stopped Gowera who was driving a Toyota Fun Cargo taxi at Rujeko A Business Centre and offered him $1 to transport them to Exormart Service Station along the Masvingo-Beitbridge Road.

Gowera agreed with Donald and Delight who were sitting in front while their colleagues sat at the back.

It is further alleged that when they were approaching Exormart, Delight allegedly slapped Gowera and pushed him out of the vehicle.

The four then reportedly got out of the vehicle and started assaulting Gowera.

They left the taxi driver for dead and drove off.

The complainant regained consciousness and made a report at Exormart police base.

Police tried to locate the taxi and it was only found the next morning while parked at Chicken Inn parking bay in the city.

A manhunt for the accused was launched leading to their arrest. Mr Edmund Mapope appeared for the State.
