While ZBC TV failed to host their traditional annual video of the year competition on New Year’s Eve, artistes got from new free to air channel Blue Ocean Satellite Television (BOStv) that carried out its version of the competition on New Year’s Day. Soulful afro jazz diva Pah Chihera’s video for “Runonzi Rudo” was the best of 2013 according to votes from the station’s viewers.

Jah Prayzah scooped second and third positions with songs “Mwanasikana” and “Tsviriyo” respectively.

Shinsoman’s “Mawaya waya” came on number two while “Personally” by Nigerian born P-Square was number five.

A surprise package in the countdown was a group a number of locals love to hate. Extra Kwazvose, who have fully embraced the “rebels” title made a surprise appearance in the top 40 of favourite videos of 2013.

According to the channel’s marketing executive, Chenai Nyakunengwa, packages that include smart television sets, orange groove Africom phones and power packs were amongst the prizes that would soon be awarded to the top five.

“The countdown was interesting and factors like sound and picture quality, innovation particularly on choreography, animations and relevance to African or international settings depending on the song’s content were considered,” she said.

She added that syncronisation of video settings to the songs content was equally essential as votes were made via text to a special code over the past few weeks.

BOStv that was launched a couple of months ago is proving to be popular with many in the country and beyond.

“We have made positive connections from different sectors of music encompassing most local genres from sungura, urban grooves and hip-hop. However, we are still aiming to reach out to more producers and artistes,” she said.
