A pupil at a city college was last Friday arraigned before the courts facing charges of contravening a section of the Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (zimsec) Act after he allegedly cheated in this year’s Ordinary Level Geography Paper 2 exam. Tinashe Matunga (18) appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Tendai Mahwe on allegations of possessing this year’s O-Level Geography paper.

Matunga pleaded not guilty to the charges and Mr Mahwe remanded him out of custody to December 9 for trial.

The prosecutor Ms Francisca Mukumbiri alleged that on November 11 Matunga had a paper with structured questions purportedly as revision material in preparation for the 2014 Geography exam.

It is alleged that Matunga took the paper to the examination centre and after the examination, a fellow pupil Tinashe Ropi and other fellow pupils quizzed him and he showed them the book that he was in possession of.

The court heard that Matunga’s college mates realised that the contents of the book were the same as those that were in the paper they had written. Ropi and the other pupils notified the school authorities whereupon a report was made to zimsec and the police.
