Hundreds of villagers gathered at the school in Mutasa North for the explosive tournament which was sponsored by South African-based soccer fanatic and former Muterere High School pupil, Kabukani Nine Maposa. HONDE Valley-based Muterere High School came out tops, beating five other teams in the second edition of the KB9 Cup schools tournament held at the school last Saturday.

Muterere High School, who also won the inaugural competition held last year, shrugged off stiff competition to clinch the coveted prize beating Nyamhingura, Chisuko, St Peters Mandeya, Chavhanga and Sagambe Secondary Schools who participated in the round-robin tournament.

Hundreds of villagers gathered at the school in Mutasa North for the explosive tournament which was sponsored by South African-based soccer fanatic and former Muterere High School pupil, Kabukani Nine Maposa.

Runners up, Sagambe walked away with bronze medals and branded T-shirts for all players after beating Nyamhingura Secondary in the dreaded penalty shoot out. Nyamhingura walked away with a new soccer ball while St Peters Mandeya was awarded the Most Disciplined Team gong.

The exciting Thomas Rutope of Chisuko Secondary School received a gold medal for being the tournament’s best goalie while the diminutive Aaron Chokoto of Muterere High School was awarded a gold medal for Best Player of the Tournament. In an interview, the tourney’s organiser and spokesperson, Emmanuel Bosha, said the tournament would go a long way in nurturing talent.

“This is a way of ploughing back to the community the sponsor grew up in. “The response from villagers was overwhelming and we hope to continue do such projects in a bid to scout local talent. “It is really hard to scout talent here in the rural areas because they are usually marginalised in terms of talent search.

“God made the event successful and come next year we will hold a bigger and better event,” said Bosha. – The Manica Post
