In celebration of the Mbira month,a show dubbed “Mbira Clash”  a battle of the mbira bands will be held on September 23 at the Book Cafe.The event is aimed at creating space for the traditional mbira players and groups and it is also meant to give young mbira players a chance to showcase the beauty of their heritage.

Event organiser Hector Mugani said they are inviting all mbira groups to come and participate on the day.

“All young traditional mbira groups or bands are invited to compete in the ‘Mbira Month Mbira Clash’.
“This will be a platform for mbira groups to showcase themselves and show their mbira skills and it will be held in a competitive format,” he said.

Before the competition day artistes will have a workshop where participants will be taught few things about the instrument and its relevance to our culture.

“There will be a brief workshop for all band leaders of groups to participate at the competition on September 18 (tomorrow).  We will consider professionalism on stage and musicians should play at least one song of local traditional of mbira like ‘Nhemamusasa’,  ‘Taireva’, ‘Nhimutimu’ and an original or contemporary composition of mbira music.

“There will be prizes for winners. The winner will have a two-track demo recording from Pamberi Trust, prize money, the band will be profiled for a week on the mbiravolution page and website for the band.”

The winner will also have a performance platform with mbira giants Mawungira eNharira at the Book Cafe in October.
