Government has applauded Zimbabweans for commemorating the National Unity Day despite calls by the opposition to impugn the day on spurious grounds.

In a statement yesterday, Information, Media and Broadcasting Services Minister Dr Christopher Mushohwe said Zimbabweans know what national unity stands for and how valuable it is.

“Expectedly, the ever-splitting and divided, negative opposition sought to impugn this sacred day on spurious grounds, including claiming that unity is not needed and should not be appreciated in circumstances of economic difficulties.

“The opposition conveniently forgets that the challenging economic situation Zimbabweans have endured since 2000 are traceable to iniquitous sanctions which, acting treacherously, it asked from the racist West,” he said.

He said far from atoning for this treacherous act, the opposition hopes and now seeks to build miserable politics out of the very suffering they have brought on the people of Zimbabwe through sanctions.

Dr Mushohwe said concerned about the re-confirmation of unity and strength of patriotic forces at the just-ended zanu-pf Annual People’s Conference, the clear evidence of a recovering economy, all set against its own disunity and fragmentation, the opposition is panicky and is desperate to divide and demoralise the people in keeping with its negative, anti-nation political tradition.

He said the attempts by the opposition will fail.

“Even more pleasing was the fact that this commemoration of the landmark Unity Accord signed by our two iconic national leaders, the late Vice-President Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo, and the State President, His Excellency Cde Robert Mugabe, an accord uniting two liberation movements, was done in perfect peace and amity.

“National unity must endure in our land, must become timeless, and must transcend generations, to become the bedrock of national peace and national development. Only in circumstances of national cohesion and peace can Zim-Asset be successfully implemented in order to recover and defend our economy from baneful Western sanctions, and to ward off any threats to our sovereignty,” he said.
