MIGHTY WARRIORS’ captain Nomsa “Boyz” Moyo, a veteran of many battles for her country, believes her troops will win their All-Africa Games qualifier against Zambia at Rufaro on Sunday.
She badly wants a victory to repay the support they have been getting from all the people who have been rallying behind the team.
Zimbabwe last met their neighbours in the 2008 Beijing Olympic qualifiers with the Mighty Warriors winning 4-0 at Gwanzura.
They had beaten the Zambians 2-1 in Lusaka in the reverse encounter.
But a lot has changed and the while local women football was in the doldrums, in the past three years, their opponents have been getting stronger.
Moyo said the players, who have been in camp for the past month, are raring to go against their neighbours.
“We have to win at all costs. The players are fully prepared for the game. We had a one-month training camp and the girls are fit.
“We have to win the match and repay the faith which has been shown by everyone who has been supporting us from the executive committee to the corporate world.
“We want to show everyone that the team has the potential to become a powerhouse again.
“We prevailed against them in the previous encounters but it will be a different match altogether,” said Moyo.
While the team prepares for its first competitive match since 2008, their board – led by chairperson Mavis Gumbo – left Harare on Wednesday night for Zurich to submit their 2015 Women’s World Cup soccer bid.
Meanwhile, the Zambian national women soccer team were expected to arrive last night via the Chirundu border post.
Coach Enala Simbeya told Post Newspaper in Lusaka before their departure that she was confident of upstaging the hosts.
“The preparations are going well because most of the players are the ones who were in the team against South Africa so we just broke camp for a week,” said Simbeya.
She said the technical bench made minor changes to the team that lost to South Africa and her team was working on the strikeforce, which was their Achilles Heel, in the defeats to Banyana Banyana.
