More girls teams at rugby jamboree
The curtain rolls down today as the Dairibord School Rugby Festival comes to an end. It has been a week-long of festivities at the traditional home of the festival, Prince Edward High School, as 186 teams took part with rivals meeting, history being made for the first and second time, newcomers impressing and old dogs making huge disappointments.
The festival was fashioned with classic clashes across all the five fields and rival agricultural schools, Prince Edward “Tigers” and Churchill “Bulldogs” putting up a fine match on Thursday while the match of the festival between the hosts and Peterhouse was cancelled on the last minute because of disturbing news in the Peterhouse’s camp.
Big guns like Falcon College, Kyle, Mbare Academy U-16, Eaglesvale, Allan Wilson, Lomagundi, Marlborough, St George’s, St John’s College and many others put up a fierce fight for each of their games, winning some and losing a few.
Girls High School, Vainona and Amhlope were the greatest achievers on the girl’s side living the crowd undecided on which as they were all favourites. They put up great appearances.
As has been the case in the past years, the festival has grown both in quality and numbers with more girls schoolsu also taking part in the festival that once was an all boys competition. A total of 30 girls teams have joined this year’s rugby jamboree with seven of them, namely Queen Elizabeth, Herentals, Mt Pleasant, Zengeza 1, Zengeza 4, Hermain Gmeiner (Bindura) and Amhlope (Bulawayo), making a first appearance.
This is the second time Dairibord Zimbabwe Limited has hosted the prestigious event that saw a great deal of fun even though most of the scores were suggesting a one-sided affair.
Most teams like Mbare High, Zengeza, Midlands Christian College, Bulawayo’s Western Suburbs, Watershed College, Petra and many others have been commended for big improvements.
