Victor Kunonga

After starving his fans for months, renowned musician Victor Kunonga turned on his swag and virtually brought the roof down over the weekend with a stunning performance at a sold out concert held at the Old Mutual Theatre at Alliance Francaise.It was a top drawer show with fans all dressed to the nines. You would be forgiven for thinking that it was a fashion show somewhere in Milan, Paris or London as male fans wore the stylish fedora hats just like their idol.

Also not to be outdone were his female fans who too, wore expensive perfumes and were simply dressed to kill.

From start to finish, the show had the makings of a thriller as tickets were sold out days before the date and when it was time to party there were no hassles.

The Old Mutual Theatre Alliance Francaise was the ideal venue for Kunonga and his band – Peace to get up close and personal with their fans.

He started slow but then the gig peaked with each song until it climaxed with some danceable tunes which he effortlessly delivered.

With three albums up his sleeves, music lovers were spoilt for choice with Kunonga hitting all the right chords and whipping the fans into a frenzy.

He played all the favourite hit songs including “Handinete”, “Marunjeya”, “Peace”(Runyararo) and of course “Wega”.

Since he burst on the music scene in 2004, Kunonga has been a notable part of Zimbabwean music as a vocalist and guitarist. He became an instant hit and established himself as an exceptional artiste with his band Peace.

He is a frequent performer at local venues and has carved out an enviable career as a performer and self-taught guitarist. Kunonga’s music is distinctive and its rhythms embrace an off-beat timing that is innovative and cutting edge.

His first album, “Such is Life” released in 2004, was followed by the 2006 album, “Uyo”. His most recent album, “Hatinete” was released in 2010 and cemented his reputation as one of the legends-in-the-making who is defining a new generation of local music.
