Harare City Council has put on hold the commissioning of the commuter omnibus holding bay located at the corner of Coventry Road and Rotten Row.The bays that were expected to open three months ago are expected to ease congestion within the Central Business District once they start operating.

In an interview last week, Town Clerk Dr Tendai Mahachi attributed the delay to pending meetings with key stakeholders among them kombi operators and the police as well as busy schedules of the new councillors.

“We have put a hold to the commissioning due to next week’s (this week) induction of councillors, after which we will meet with police who are a key stakeholder in this project,” said Dr Mahachi.

“The bay is likely to come into use two weeks after the meeting with the force. We will also need to broadcast the way business will be run using the loading bays using different forms of media and this will further delay the opening.”

Dr Mahachi said in future the bays would also need to go through a second phase involving the putting up of convenience shops and a proper bus terminus.

He said an estimated US$1 million would be needed for the second phase.
