Many times, celebrities are not only adored for their leading roles in movies or music but their presentation make them role models to the society. They definitely need to look good mostly with make-up in order to be outstanding. The Herald Entertainment reporter Tafadzwa Zimoyo (TZ) caught up with one of Hollywood’s most renowned make-up artists, Jackie Mgido (JM), owner of Vault Cosmetics, who shared her experience as a make-up artist. Mgido, a Zimbabwean national by birth, is known to have worked with film stars and musicians like Snoop Dog, Cuba Gooding Jnr, Wiz Khlifa and Jane Lynch among others. She is not new to the media but each time she comes back to Zimbabwe she has a story to tell.

Mgido, who is in the country to promote her latest products and new school, supported singer Beyonce Knowles’ statement that: “My persuasion can build a nation”.

In regard to this Mgido has opened a make-up school called Vault Cosmetics Academy to empower the women of Zimbabwe.
Below are excerpts from the interview.

TZ: Welcome back to Zimbabwe, tell us, why are you back?
JM: Thank you so much. Zimbabwe is always my home though I will be going back mid-December to LA, California, for the festive season with my family. Well, I after felt the need and how Zimbabwean women have been dying for my make-up, I thought of coming back to open a school of cosmetics and my latest lipstick range. I am happy Vault has been doing well in my absence.

TZ: How do you want to create jobs for ordinary women through make-up?
JM: I want to create jobs to women through conducting make-up lessons. I was on Star FM recently talking about my products and how women especially can be empowered.

I don’t have money to open Vault Cosmetics all over the country but what I am doing is that have opened a school, where they can come and learn to apply make-up which then will help them having jobs such as doing make-up for weddings, companies and parties. Just like in Hollywood, how they value the artistry is amazing and it can sustain livelihoods apart from promoting tourism. I am also offering scholarships to young women who want to venture into the business but all is done under the Vault Academy.

TZ: Apart from international stars you have worked with, who in Zimbabwe do you die for to do make-up and why?
JM: I wish to apply make-up on Mai Chisamba. She once came to our studio and my girls worked on her but personally I adore the woman because she has brought the talk-show live and inspires me to be better and challenge for the best. My role model is Sam Fine from LA, though little is known about him but he was the one who started the Kim Kardashian show look.

TZ: What is your latest project internationally and locally?
JM: Locally, I am planning to host the Style Wars Awards before I leave. I am also working with Truworth’s on my range and the good news is I am bringing back, Dillish Matthews. Internationally I am working with Elton Brown of the Food Channel and I am going to do make-up for the Oscar awards nominees’ special.

TZ: Any challenges you have faced in your line of duty and how can we develop the arts sector?
JM: I am happy that my artistry has been accepted by a lot of women. The biggest challenge is try to make women look good in make-up and convince those who hate it.

TZ: What is your biggest dream?
JM: My biggest dream is to create jobs for women in Africa. I love make-up and it’s my dream that every women understands this.
