A Zimbabwean woman who allegedly posed as a maid in South Africa and stole R1,5 million, hundreds of Euros and pounds from her employer with the assistance of her two cousins, will remain in remand prison after the High Court quashed bail granted to her by a Harare magistrate.

Constance Mujeyi (28) and her brothers — Watson Laiton (27) and Mathew Laiton (23) — will remain in prison because the High Court found it fit to have them locked up.

The trio was granted $100 bail each at the Harare Magistrate Court recently, but the State invoked Section 121 of the Criminal Procedure and Evidence Act arguing that the court had erred.

Justice Garainesu Mawadze on appeal held that there was overwhelming evidence against the suspects and that there was a risk of the suspects escaping the jurisdiction of the court.

His order reads: “It is ordered that the appeal be and is hereby upheld.”

Mujeyi allegedly hatched a plan to steal from Veronica Wilkins and roped in her cousins, who helped her flee to Zimbabwe.

They reportedly built a house and bought a car (Toyota Mark II) before concealing the balance.
