Harare City Council has disconnected water supplies to Caps Pharmaceuticals which illegally connected supplies to its premises, while 5 000 disconnections have been effected in the western suburbs for non-payment of water bills, by-passing meters and bribery of meter readers.

Caps Pharmaceuticals has been facing financial constraints since the introduction of the multi-currency regime in 2009 and is failing to pay salaries to its workers.

The disgruntled workers wrote to council notifying them of the illegality and copied the letter to the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission.

The city’s acting corporate communications manager Mr Michael Chideme confirmed that the company was illegally connected.

He said the city would now carry out a water audit to weed out illegal connections.

He said from May 23 to June 10, the city carried out 4 846 disconnections in Glen Norah, Dzivaresekwa, Hatcliffe, Mbare, Mufakose, Kambuzuma, Highfield, Tafara, Sunningdale, Kuwadzana, Mabvuku, Glen View, Budiriro and Warren Park.
