A cooking competition that will give an opportunity for people to showcase their culinary skills with traditional foods will be launched in Harare next week.

The brainchild of a veteran hotelier and executive chef George Mubare, Kitchen Champion Zimbabwe will see people from all walks of life taking part in the elimination contest spread over two-and-a-half months.

It is anticipated that the episodes will eventually be broadcast locally and internationally with the support of sponsors who have thrown their support behind the concept.

“I have been in the hotel and catering industry for more than 20 years and felt that there was need to present those passionate about cooking to showcase their skills in a competitive environ- ment.

“This includes everybody from housewives, the young and the old. The dishes will range from stir fries and innovative heritage dishes including sadza and the shooting will be done at hotels countrywide,” Mubare the creative director said.

He said that registration begins on Saturday next week at New Ambassador Hotel and Girls High School in Harare.

Local and international judges will be invited to the competition that will also serve as a gateway for youths planning to venture into the hospitality industry. There is a registration fee of $10 for all the contestants.

Mubare’s forthcoming Taste of Zimbabwe Recipes book will be a crucial component of those seeking to explore the richness of local dishes that can be entered in the exciting series that is set to spread beyond our borders.

Another cooking series Battle of the Chefs has been shot in Zimbabwe and featured some of the country’s finest chefs under the direction of culinary enthusiast Joseph Bunga who has taken the team as far as the tourism hub of Victoria Falls.
