Government officials will join investors from various sectors of the economy at a one-day conference in Chivi next month to identify and work on projects that can be undertaken in the district under the Zimbabwe Agenda for Sustainable Socio-Economic Transformation.

Chivi Rural District Council chairperson Cde Killer Zivhu said at a Press briefing on Monday that the conference, which will take place on February 14, would also look at the development opportunities arising from the Tokwe-Mukosi Dam, which is expected to be completed before the end of this year.

The dam will become the country’s largest inland dam and will present business opportunities in various areas related to tourism and agriculture.

“The theme of the conference will be: ‘Developing Chivi in line with Zim-Asset,’ said Cde Zivhu.

“At this meeting we will be sharing ideas on how best to find local resources and how we can implement a positive development plan that will not only provide jobs but improve the district’s infrastructure.

“Since the main focus is infrastructure – the rehabilitation of roads, schools, dam walls, clinics and boreholes is where we are going to start from. Then we are going to work on drilling new boreholes, building new dam walls, facilitating irrigation schemes since this is a semi-arid area, developing new roads and constructing new schools and clinics within a reasonable walking distance to the homesteads in this district.”

Cde Zivhu said those invited to the Zim-Asset conference would include community leaders, heads of ministries, chiefs, non-governmental organisations, politicians, church leaders and all the people who hail from Chivi and want to invest in projects such as Tokwe-Mukosi.

He said the conference will also look at ways to help villagers from Chivi who were resettled at Chingwizi in Mwenezi after being affected by floods at Tokwe-Mukosi Dam.

“We want Government to consider the plight of people at Chingwizi as a matter of urgency. The one hectare plots these people were allocated are bushes which need to be cleared. The tents these people were given are now torn,” said Cde Zivhu.

The villagers that re-located from Tokwe-Mukosi to Chingwizi last year are mainly from Cde Zivhu’s ward.
