The Zimbabwe Congress of Students Union (ZICOSU) will on Saturday hold a belated birthday bash for President Mugabe at Bindura University of Science Education in appreciation of his efforts towards improving the education system.

Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development Minister Oppah Muchinguri will be the guest of honour.

ZICOSU president Mr Tonderai Chidawa described the celebrations as an appreciation of what the President as the Chancellor of State universities had done to the education system.

“As students we felt it is necessary to honour His Excellence who is our Chancellor and role model.

“We emulate his good reputation and we have decided to celebrate his birthday in style to show the nation that we appreciate what President Mugabe has done.

“We are the leaders of tomorrow and we must remain resolute in defending our sovereignty.

“Zimbabwe is recognised for having the best education system in Africa, resultantly we boast of the highest literacy rates. The country has witnessed a major expansion in tertiary institutions now offering diplomas, degrees and post-graduate qualifications unlike at independence when we only had one national university,” he said.

Mr Chidawa said ZICOSU decided to celebrate in Bindura because it is the central point to all institutions in the province.

“We have been thinking about the idea since the day we went to Victoria Falls to celebrate the President’s birthday. We decided to honour him, a first of its kind, with pomp and fanfare.”

Minister of State for Mashonaland Central Provincial Affairs Advocate Martin Dinha and provincial political leaders are expected to grace the occasion.

President Mugabe turned 91 on February 21, and had his birthday celebrations in Victoria Falls.

This year’s celebrations were held under the theme, “Celebrating the birth of Gushungo, the icon of Zimbabwe’s revolution and champion of youth empowerment” and coincided with the 29th anniversary of 21st February Movement.
