The Zimbabwe Republic Police Support Unit has been urged to be on high alert in order to protect the country’s liberation gains and defeat economic and environmental saboteurs such as elephant poachers and panners.Speaking at a pass-out parade of the Instructional Course Number 01/2013 and Induction Course Number 02/13 held on Friday at Chikurubi Support Unit, Senior Assistant Commissioner Mekia Tanyanyiwa said although the country enjoyed peace during and after elections, it does not mean that the police should relax but that they had to remain on alert to preserve hard-won gains.

The pass-out parade comprised 183 members made up of 41 instructors and 142 inductees. “Elections have come and gone and we are in peace time. This, however, does not mean that it is time to relax.

“This is the time to be extra alert and extra vigilant so as to protect, defend and develop our hard-won gains,” he said.
Asst Comm Tanyanyiwa said police were aware of all the saboteurs across the country and would deal with criminals through effective deployments. “We should be prepared to work round the clock to support all Government programmes and policies and be ready to deal with any saboteurs.

“We are aware of saboteurs who are engaged in criminal activities like the massive killing of elephants and the environmental degradation caused by illegal mineral panning. We are also aware of poaching activities in all national parks and conservancies, cattle rustling in Sango, Masvingo and Jambezi in Matabeleland North provinces and the recent petrol bombings of some properties in Harare. We should not forget the threats posed by a looming armed conflict in Mozambique on our eastern borderline.

“We must not relax but ensure that such criminal activities are nipped in the bud through effective deployments,” he said.
