At least 3 255 cases of crime have been recorded in Harare province during the last three months.
Of the 3 255, 32 were armed robbery, 107 (rape of juveniles), 1 111 (plain robbery), 129 (rape of adults), while 1 876 cases were of unlawful entry into premises and thefts.
Speaking at the police Service Charter re-launch on Saturday, Officer Commanding Harare province Senior Assistant Commissioner Clemence Munoriarwa said some of the cases had decreased compared to last year.

“Through the support of the community, cases of armed robbery decreased by 3 percent from 33 cases in the first quarter of 2013 to 32 cases in the first quarter of 2014, rape of juveniles decreased by 2 percent from 109 cases in the same quarter of 2013 to 107 cases in 2014,” he said.

Snr Asst Comm Munoriarwa said cases of plain robbery, rape of adults and unlawful entry into premises and theft had increased this year.
“Most cases of plain robberies are emanating from commuter omnibuses which pose as genuine passenger carriers, thereby robbing unsuspecting passengers of their possessions,” he said.

“I am glad to inform you that the police in Harare have already put in strategies to curb such cases of plain robberies.”
Snr Asst Comm Munoriarwa said the issue of rape involving minors where the survivors and suspects were related was a cause of concern.

“Also of major concern are rape cases from false prophets who lure women to their shrines,” he said. “The province and the nation at large is facing yet another weird scenario where females have decided to turn the tables against their male counterparts.

“Cases of aggravated indecent assault being perpetrated by women commonly known as female rapists have become topical.
“It only shows the extent of damage that we are causing to our social fabric as a country.”

Snr Asst Comm Munoriarwa said corruption was another crime that had been bedevilling the society.
He assured members of the public that the force would thrive hard to deliver quality service as outlined in their service charter.

The re-launch of the Service Charter was attended by Minister of State for Harare Miriam Chikukwa, senior police, army and Zanu-PF officials.
