The Zanu-PF Masvingo provincial executive has set up 10 sub-committees to spearhead preparations for the 16th ruling party’s Annual National People’s Conference to be hosted by the province in December.

Dates for the conference together with the venue have not yet been announced. The ruling party wants to ensure that Masvingo hosts a successful conference that will be attended by thousands of party members from all corners of Zimbabwe and beyond.

The formation of the sub-committees followed a visit to the province by Zanu-PF national political commissar Cde Saviour Kasukuwere, who urged the ruling party to set the ball rolling and start preparations for the Annual People’s conference.

Among the sub-committees are those responsible for mobilisation, transport and logistics, security, entertainment and administration.

Zanu-PF Masvingo acting provincial chairman Cde Amasa Nhenjana, yesterday revealed that sub-committees were now in place as Masvingo geared for the Annual National People’s Conference.

“Ten sub-committees are now in place to prepare for our conference and these committees will soon be beefed up by Government departments in the province because we have already hit the ground running in preparing for our conference which we want to be the biggest and best ever,’’ he said.

“We agreed as the Zanu-PF leadership in Masvingo to hold a meeting with Government departments in the province before the end of this month, where we will assign specific roles to each sub-committee and we are optimistic that we will come up with the mother of all conferences of the ruling party,’’ he added.

Cde Nhenjana said the newfound unity within Zanu-PF in the province had made preparations for the conference a lot easier with all the leaders now pulling in the same direction.

Last year’s conference was held in Victoria Falls, Matabeleland North Province.

Masvingo Province last hosted the Conference in December 2003 at Masvingo Teachers’ College.

Cde Nhenjana is, however, on record saying the ruling party provincial executive in Masvingo would seek guidance from senior Zanu-PF leaders in the province such as Cdes Josaya Hungwe and Masvingo Provincial Affairs Minister Senator Shuvai Mahofa on the choice of the venue to hold this year’s conference.

Masvingo’s selection to host this year’s Zanu-PF Annual National People’s Conference comes after the province successfully hosted President Mugabe’s 92nd birthday commemorations at Great Zimbabwe Monuments.

The celebrations were held on February 27 and drew over 50 000 delegates who packed the Great Zimbabwe Monuments grounds. The celebrations were hailed as the biggest ever judging by the capacity crowd that thronged the historic ancient city to lead the rest of the nation to mark President Mugabe’s milestone of attaining 92 years.

The Zanu-PF Politburo will set dates and the theme for this year’s National People’s Conference that normally runs for the whole week with around 5 000 party members in attendance.
