THE Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) in Mutare last week held awareness campaigns aimed at encouraging people to shun political violence and maintain peace and unity throughout the country.

Manicaland police spokesperson Inspector Tavhiringwa Kakohwa said it was crucial for citizens to be peaceful, especially in the aftermath of last week’s harmonised elections.

He urged the people not to engage in political violence and maintain the prevailing peace.

“Awareness campaigns are done frequently, not just in Mutare, but the whole nation, basically on theft and rape cases,” said Insp Kakohwa.

Insp Kakohwa added that the campaigns would not be confined to the Central Business District only, but would be held in all areas, including residential areas.

He said the ZRP was against people engaging in any form of political violence or harassment stemming from political differences.

“We want people to uphold the Constitution and rule of law,” he said. “It is also time to speak about love and peace. Violence should be a thing of the past; there is no need for people to hate, fight and kill each other.”

The run-up to the harmonised elections was peaceful and so was the voting process.

Insp Kakohwa revealed that the police did not receive any political violence reports during the elections, which meant that people exercised their voting rights freely and peacefully in Mutare.

He also paid tribute to the Peace Pledge launch which was held in Mutare last week, saying it contributed to the unity and peace in city.
