The Zimbabwe National Water Authority (Zinwa) has embarked on a major water reticulation system upgrade in Mhangura town in an effort to improve service delivery. Water provision in the now defunct mining town have, since the mine’s closure, been poor, with residents going for months without running water. Following its takeover of the water and sewer reticulation system in Mhangura, Zinwa, which has faced resistance from some of the residence, has been struggling to provide services to the residents on a shoe-string budget.

In an interview recently, Zinwa’s corporate communications and marketing manager Mrs Marjorie Munyonga said the authority was working tirelessly to provide water 24 hours a day to the former mining town.

“There are rehabilitation works currently underway in Mhangura and these have led to water supply disruptions for some parts of the place,” she said. “The works seek to curb water losses through leaks. Residents in the affected areas are getting water for at least four hours a day to allow pipe work repairs. However, residents in already rehabilitated areas are having uninterrupted supply of water.”

The programme currently involves the rehabilitation of raw water pumping equipment, rehabilitation of the water treatment plant, repairs to the water storage tank, reticulation extensions as well as carrying out individual connections. Mrs Munyonga said Zinwa was trying to make sure that all residents are connected to the water system.

“The individual connections will see users in Mhangura getting water meters installed for them so that they move from the current system where consumers are using water as groups,” she said.
