Zimbabwe says it is committed to institutionalising the whole of Government and society approach in the implementation, monitoring and evaluation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Minister Professor Paul Mavima made the remarks while addressing the 2021 High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development.

“Government is strengthening the institutional framework by establishing a fully-fledged SDGs Unit,” he said. “Development will only be sustainable if it is inclusive in line with principles of leaving no one behind.

“We are committed to institutionalising the Whole of Government and Society Approach in the implementation, monitoring and evaluation of SDGs.

“Our NDS 1 (National Development Strategy 1) promotes inclusive development; building climate resilience, effective natural resources management, value addition and beneficiation of the country’s resources, sustaining macroeconomic stability, investment promotion and infrastructure development.”

Minister Mavima said the primary focus of the 2021 (Voluntary National Review) VNR was to follow up on progress made in the implementation of all the 17 SDGs since the first VNR which Zimbabwe presented in 2017.

He said Zimbabwe successfully mainstreamed the implementation of SDGs in the national development plans, “localisation is being achieved through the devolution thrust.”

“Significant progress in the implementation of SDGs has been underpinned by: the country’s Vision 2030 which aims to achieve an Empowered and Prosperous Upper Middle-Income Society by 2030,” he said.

“Vision 2030 will be attained through implementation of successive National Development Strategies – National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1, 2021 – 2025) and National Development Strategy 2 (NDS 2, 2026- 2030).”
