Zanu PF youths from Zone Six District in Harare yesterday left a lasting impression to the elderly in Mbare after they cleaned their houses and gave them food hampers.

The elderly also got face masks to reduce the risk of Covid-19 infection.

The hampers contained cooking oil, sugar and rice.

Speaking during the clean-up and donation, Harare Zone 6 District Coordinating Committee (DCC) chairman Cde Emmanuel Mahachi, who donated the hampers, said the exercise would be done monthly.

“Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we have selected the elderly living in the Joburg lines in Mbare. We invited the youths to come and clean at their homesteads,” he said.

“We also took the opportunity to donate food hampers to these elderly as they cannot afford to fend for themselves. We want to thank Zanu-PF for supporting us to be able to be self-sustainabl.”

A Zanu-PF Central Committee member Cde Cornelius Bwanya said the country’s Constitution had provisions that recognised that the elderly and disadvantaged should be honoured.

“So if the honour comes from the youth, l salute that. As the ruling party, we should keep leading by example as demonstrated by the youth chairperson. At our age, we are not afraid to die as we know that we have left a legacy of love among the future generations.”

A beneficiary, Ms Benadette Bonde, said the gesture by the youths was great.

“This is commendable that our own Zanu PF kids have the zeal to follow the party’s footpath of giving generously. We could not afford to eke out a living, but he (Cde Mahachi) decided to share with us the little he had,” he said.

Ms Bonde called for the continuation of the clean-up campaigns to keep environments clean.

“Cleanliness is at God’s heart. If the President started the National Clean-up campaign, we should continue following that path.

“Although there is Covid-19, we will gather in small numbers as witnessed here today.”

Another beneficiary, Gogo Fungisai Marere, said she was glad the youths had remembered the elderly during this Covid-19 era,.
