Mucheni’s offence was responding in the negative to a request by Chivere to buy him a drink at Machacha Bottle Store where the two later, having earlier on met at a village dip tank.

Masvingo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa said on the fateful day, Chivere assisted in rescuing Mucheni’s cow that was trapped by poles that form the dip tank’s walls.

When the two fellow villagers let met at Machacha Bottle Store, Chivere asked Mucheni to return the favour and quench his dry throat.

When Mucheni said he had no money on him, an irritated Chivere stood up from his stool and struck the septuagenarian at the back of his head.

The hapless grandfather sustained a deep cut and fell to the ground while bleeding intensely. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital and Chivere allegedly vanished from the scene and remains unaccounted for.
