Walter Nyamukondiwa  Kariba Bureau

Women and youths in Kariba have obtained life skills needed in becoming producers of various products such as detergents and confectionaries.

The training ran under the National Enterprise Development Programme and was supported by the Tonganyika Trust, Zimbabwe Science and Technology Association and Nature’s College.

At least 243 people graduated after completing their programmes.

Those who graduated received certificates and were drawn from Kariba’s nine urban wards.

Guest of honour at the ceremony, Cde Tapson Shumba, who is Zanu PF Shadow Member of Parliament for Kariba Constituency, said people should take advantage of empowerment programmes being spearheaded by the Second Republic and Zanu PF to develop themselves.

“We realise that women and youths have a significant role to play in the attainment of goals set out in the National Development Strategy (NDS1) and Vision 2030,” said Cde Shumba. “For that to happen, we need people with skills who can come up with initiatives to foster development in the areas they live.”

Training coordinator, Mr Lister Nigo, said Kariba’s economy needed to be diversified from fisheries and tourism.

“We want a situation where people in the district have a variety of options to choose from when it comes to economic activity. Currently, the fisheries sector is under strain from over-exploitation,” he said. One of the graduates, Ms Mendy Muchabaiwa, hailed the programme for supporting the empowerment of women.
