A Harare man threatened to commit suicide after he was caught by his wife in the toilet attempting to rape his eight-year-old daughter, the Harare Civil Court heard yesterday. The woman (name withheld to protect victim’s identity) said her husband (name supplied), was living in fear that she would report him to the police.

She claimed the fear was now affecting their relationship.
“He is always threatening to commit suicide because he is under a lot of pressure from the fact that I once caught him red-handed attempting to rape our daughter in the toilet,” the woman said.

She said she reported the matter to her in-laws, but they turned the tables against her.
“I even went to tell his parents about the attempted rape, but they started accusing me of trying to have their son arrested,” she said.
The woman claimed the man was in the habit of assaulting her and pleaded with the court to grant her a protection order.

The man refuted the allegations and accused the woman of locking him outside the house every time he came home late from work.
“She physically and verbally abuses me in the presence of our two minor children and sometimes spits in my face,” he said. Sometimes I gain entry into the bedroom by breaking the window panes since she locks me outside the house.” He claimed that his wife was always threatening to kill him or have him arrested over petty issues. The woman dismissed the man’s allegations. Magistrate Ms Babra Masinire granted the protection order which barred the woman from physically or verbally abusing Tigere.
