LONDON. — Arsene Wenger has refused to be drawn on the war of words with Jose Mourinho, but will not rule out more spending this summer. The Portuguese hit out at the Arsenal boss this week, claiming Chelsea won the title last term spending far less money than their London counterparts. It stoked the fire ahead of the long-term rivals’ latest showdown in the Community Shield at Wembley, with Mourinho still unbeaten in 13 matches against Wenger.

But the Gunners chief would not respond to the comments, insisting he will let other managers comment on his transfer dealings.

“I get different reproaches – that I don’t spend enough then I spend too much. I let other people talk,” he said.

“One day you will look at the players we have developed here compared to the spending and other clubs and you will be surprised.

“The trend in our society is to always want new things but longevity, history and cohesion has to be respected too.”

Wenger also refused to rule out any more new arrivals at the Emirates this summer, with Petr Cech the only addition to date.

“We know we will be better but it’s difficult to know how much our opponents will improve before the season.

“If we can still strengthen, we will do it.”

Wenger dismissed the idea that Southampton tried to loan back Calum Chambers, with the England Under-21 defender set to be developed as a centre-back this season. — The Mirror.
