Vic Falls gets US$77 000 for gully reclamation

The town had been besieged by gullies from all corners that are threatening a hotel, the railway line and about 21 houses in Chinotimba township.
In this light, OCHA under the emergency response funds, has released the funds to be used in the exercise within the next six months.

In an interview during a tour of one of the projects in Chinotimba township where a team was on the ground reclaiming a gully yesterday, the country director for a local non-governmental organisation Environment Africa (EA) Mr Nhamo Chuma said: “The United Nations emergency fund released the funds to council but they will be accessed through us for gully reclamation.
“So we are in partnership with the municipality to see to it that the gullies are reclaimed before the start of the rainy season.”
Mr Chuma said the project had three components adding that they had hired a bulldozer from Hwange Local Board for the exercise.

“These are gully filling and reclamation through the planting of jatropha trees and vertiver grass which are all excellent in holding soils to prevent further erosion.
“They are also drought resistant.

“The second component is repairing broken sewage pipes and lastly there is the Participatory Hygienic Education to educate residents on proper utilisation of storm drains. The exercise is also aimed at preventing residents from getting water-borne diseases while pipes are being fixed,” he said.
Mr Chuma said they had also introduced food for work programmes where residents would participate through clearing storm water drains.
“About 50 residents have already participated by clearing about 20 metres each of storm drains, removing litter and blockages so that run-off follows proper channels. At the end they all received food hampers,” he said.
