Former Mwenezi legislator and Zanu-PF Central Committee member Cde Lamson Matavire Moyo, who died early this month, was buried recently at his rural home in Bhangadhi village.

He was 73.

The veteran educationist reportedly collapsed during independence celebrations in Mwenezi and was taken to Masvingo General Hospital where he eventually died.

Scores of mourners thronged the Moyo homestead, where Mwenezi District Administrator Mrs Rosemary Chingwe led proceedings.

Speaker after speaker spoke well of the late provincial hero.

“We have lost a prominent person in the district. Society highly respected the late Cde Moyo,” said Mrs Chingwe.

Family spokesperson Mr Tariro Matavire, who is also the chief executive of Chibi Rural District Council, said the late Cde Moyo was an “irreplaceable” consensus builder in the family.

“Cde Moyo, who was born on September 26, 1946 in Bangwe area of Mwenezi, encouraged unity among his family members. He is an irreplaceable figure.

“The community cherished his good works. He was a councillor for 23 years. He did his primary and secondary education in Lundi, before training as a teacher at Morgenster Mission Teachers ‘College and proceeded to complete his Bachelor’s Degree in Education Administration with the Zimbabwe Open University,” said Mr Matavire.

He said the late hero had a wealth of work experience in life, education and local governance-related issues.

He said the party stalwart had also taught at Chikombedzi Primary School from 1970 to 1973, went on to become head at three schools, namely Bangwe, Badza Primary School in Chivi and Marinda Primary School in Mwenezi.

“He also had a stint as acting education officer for Mwenezi,” said Mr Matavire.
