Street vendors are sneaking back into Harare’s central business district (CBD), taking advantage of the slight return to normal day-to-day life after the Government relaxed lockdown regulations.

Vendors along First Street were selling an assortment of products including clothes, cellphones and accessories, while some were roasting green mealies in other parts of the city, blocking traffic and exposing themselves and their clients to Covid-19.

Minister of State for Harare Metropolitan Province, Oliver Chidawu, recently said informal traders should maintain the order and cleanliness that prevailed in the CBD during the first 35 days of national lockdown.

Government wants vendors to operate from designated workspaces.

Harare City Council spokesperson Mr Michael Chideme on Tuesday said fuel challenges were hindering their clampdown on the vendors.
