One of the country’s biggest platinum miners, Mimosa Mines has thrown Masvingo General Hospital a lifeline after it refurbished a theatre and laundry unit at the health institution at a cost of US$45 000.

The company, through its workers committee, also donated a consignment of maize-meal, groceries and blankets towards the victims of Cyclone Idai in Bikita, Gutu, Zaka and Chiredzi.

Speaking at the official handover ceremony at the hospital yesterday, Mines and Mining Development Minister Winston Chitando, hailed Mimosa for its philanthropic gesture saying its management had demonstrated unparalleled commitment to promoting health delivery in the country.

“We want to thank Mimosa Mine for such a gesture of promoting health in the country. What we have witnessed here instils a lot of pride in most of us,” he.

He said Mimosa had control over a few reserves of the platinum ore found in the country but was already doing a great job.

“Mimosa Mine holds, only 6 percent of the total platinum deposits in the country but is doing great work like what we are seeing here.

‘‘The refurbishment of theatre and laundry unit is not a mean achievement. Like what I said we have some unutilised platinum reserves, four of them in the country.

“It is against this background that the management should consider starting work on one of them since some are found in Masvingo,” he said.

Minister Chadzamira hailed Mimosa Mine for embracing his vision of having corporates developing health facilities in the province than waiting for Government to do everything.

“I am happy that Mimosa Mine is already embracing my vision to have corporates develop in Government institutions like this one.

“I challenge other companies working in Masvingo province like Tongaat Huletts, Renco Mine and Bikita Minerals to emulate such good works.

‘‘This is despite that the company operates in the Midlands and those using our resources here cannot fail to do something,” said Minister Chadzamira.

Masvingo General Hospital superintendent Dr Julius Chirengwa thanked Mimosa for living up to its promise through completing the work started in 2016 despite.

He said the company had fulfilled a promise made to Masvingo General Hospital in 2017 when Minister Chitando was still at Mimosa as managing director.

“Our laundry department was becoming too small and the environment was not healthy. Unfortunately the ablution block was left out in the original plan but Mimosa has promised to attend to that. I wish other companies to emulate what Mimosa has done,” said Dr Chirengwa.

“My priority will be to have our maternity ward refurbished and mortuary also renovated. We also need a staff bus as our staff commuter from Mucheke.

‘‘On behalf of the hospital staff, I would want to express my profound gratitude to the Minister, for helping us in refurbishing our theatre and laundry unit,” he said.
