THOUSANDS of people are expected to attend this year’s Independence celebrations as Zimbabwe marks 36 years of freedom and liberation from British oppression.

Zimbabwe celebrates its Independence Day on April 18 and preparations for the day are well on course at national, provincial and district levels.

In an interview yesterday, Harare provincial administrator Mr Alfred Tome said plans to host the celebrations were going according to plan.

“All provinces and departments are ready for the Independence celebrations, and starting with the uniformed forces, their rehearsals have been going on well and we hope these will be successful.

“We have noticed that it is important to involve all country provincial representatives and we should have all these representatives from provinces. We are sending a bus to each province so that people can come in their numbers,” he said.

He said 39 buses had since been availed to ferry people to and from the celebrations at the usual pick- up points.

Mr Tome said the celebrations would start with the annual children’s party, where President Mugabe will host young Zimbabweans from all provinces.

“We are going to have the children’s annual party with representatives from the 10 provinces and they will have a chance to meet and talk with the President himself at the City Sports Centre on the 17th of April,” he said.

He said Independence Day was an important national event, which brought together all Zimbabweans in the spirit of oneness.

“Our usual motto is that this is the birthday of our beloved country and we expect each and every one to come forward and celebrate as one. Children, youths, war veterans and the nation at large should come out to celebrate this day.”

He said Independence Day was an important national event, which brought together all Zimbabweans in the spirit of oneness.

“This event should not attract any division amongst the people of Zimbabwe, as we will be coming together to celebrate our achievement, especially the children whom we are going to hand over this revolutionary baton.”
