Two killed in separate accidents

A 73-year-old woman died on the spot on Monday near Birchenough Bridge when a bus she was travelling on was involved in an accident.

At least 19 other passengers were injured and rushed to Murambinda Hospital.

Police have identified the deceased as Esiteri Dzingirai of Chikaka Village.

“Esiteri Dzingirai of Chikaka Village died on the spot after Bernard Murozvi (52), the driver of the bus, lost control of the vehicle,” said Manicaland spokesperson Inspector Tavhiringwa Kakohwa.

The bus belonged to Mashoko Travellers Company and was on its way to Birchenough from Murambinda, Buhera.

Murizvo is alleged to have been speeding. “The other 19 passengers were injured and were taken to Murambinda Hospital for treatment and the body of the deceased was taken to Murambinda Hospital mortuary,” said Insp Kakohwa.

Meanwhile, a 24-year-old commuter omnibus driver lost control of his vehicle and fatally struck a herdsman in Nyanga on Monday.  “Fungai Norest Mateta (24) was driving a commuter omnibus with registration numbers ACL 4417 along Nyarukohwa-Nyarubvure Road with seven passengers,” said Insp Kakohwa. “Upon reaching the 35km peg near Nyarukohwa Bridge in Nyanga, Mateta saw a herd of cattle coming his way. He tried to avoid hitting the cattle and lost control of the vehicle and hit the herdsman instead.”
