Dendera musician Tryson Chimbetu spent the last part of 2013 struggling as things went bad in his band and shows attracted paltry crowds. Despite a promising start to 2013, all went wrong as the year progressed leading to the departure of key band members including Nyasha Mugari, Wayne Kembo and Tongogara “Papa Tongo” Munemo, who cited poor remuneration.

Chimbetu fired manager Mugari before hiring the services of Francis Motsi who tried to up keep the welfare of the band members.

Documents in possession of The Herald Entertainment reveal that during Motsi’s time most band members were getting wages of US$110 on top of US$40 allowances every Monday.

However, last week reports suggested that band members were getting US$9 allowances and US$20 salaries every  week.

Chimbetu yesterday opened up on the situation at his band and misfortunes he has faced.

“Towards the end of last year things got tough and we were getting little amounts that made us struggle to pay band members,” he said.

He added that at one point he lost hope after holding shows for close to two weeks without getting reasonable returns.

“I ended leaving everything to God, but to be honest I had lost hope though it was naturally tough for every musician.

“Festive season is a time for musicians to make money but something was wrong last year. Sometimes band members do not care that

there has been a less attendance at a show. They just want their money. It was so stressing and there were no sponsors to rescue us.

“Some members had to go and I accepted it. It was a rough patch. I was really stressed.

“I was relieved when we took a break after New Year because I got time to restrategise.”

Chimbetu hired two managers, Wayne Mutukwa who will be public relations manager and Simba Mahenga who will be the marketing manager.

“I am confident in these two guys and this year we will be staring on a high note.”

He added that he has hired three new dancers and another lead guitarist.

“We are going to unveil the new team on Friday (tomorrow) at Club 40 in Glenview 3, Saturday De Javu in Kuwadzana then Sunday at Megga 1 Bar,” he said.

The Pahotera hit maker said they got these shows under the new management.
