Tropical storm Ana yesterday hit the Mozambican coast around noon near the Angoche town and weakened into an overland depression which is now losing strength.

The storm hit Mozambique with maximum gusts estimated at 110 kilometres per hour and a central pressure at 990hpa.

Strong winds are still expected to continue near the centre for the next few hours before fading.

In an update, the Meteorological Services Department said heavy rains likely to cause landslides and floods were moving westward and would continue affecting Mozambique and southern parts of Malawi before proceeding to influence weather over northern and eastern Zimbabwe and Southern Zambia.

“Localised downpours above 50 mm and strong winds are probable in Chipinge, Chimanimani, Mutare, Nyanga Mudzi, Uzumba Maramba Pfungwe, Rushinga, Mt Darwin, Centenary, Mbire, Northern Hurungwe and Kariba from today until Thursday. Moderate rains are expected elsewhere,” said the MSD.
