A Bikita primary school teacher, Mr Benjamin Masakadza, last week landed the chairmanship of Bikita Rural District Council. Councillor Masakadza (zanu-pf), who is a teacher at Zindove Primary School in the district was elected Bikita RDC chair unopposed during polls held in the council boardroom at Nyika Growth Point.

He is a former chairperson of the Finance and Procurement committee in the previous council and takes over from Cde Clara Makura who failed in her comeback bid to council after losing zanu-pf primary polls in Ward 29 before the July 30 harmonised elections.

Bikita RDC chief executive Mr Peter Chibi expressed optimism that the new crop of councillors led by Clr Masakadza would deliver over the next five years. Bikita District Administrator Mr Benard Hadzirabwi presided over the swearing-in.

Mr Chibi said he was encouraged by the positive vision exhibited by the new team of councillors.

“The ideas on development, which they are bringing forward are just brilliant and I am looking forward to a robust team of councillors that will take Bikita RDC to the next level in terms of development,” said Mr Chibi.

He said chairpersons of council portfolio committees will be elected after councillors had undergone induction.

zanu-pf Ward 11 Clr Lawrence Vhovha was voted Clr Masakadza’s deputy unopposed. Bikita RDC has 32 wards and the ruling party won 26 in the July 30 harmonised polls with MDC-Alliance settling for the difference.

Out of the 32 councillors who were voted into office, only four are female.
