The Police Support Unit arrested more than 90 000 suspects this year and recovered goods worth over $5 million countrywide. Police Commissioner-General Dr Augustine Chihuri said the unit managed to raise $1 346 474 in revenue through fines.

He said this in a speech read on his behalf by Police Commissioner (operations) Mekia Tanyanyiwa at the Support Unit’s end of year party held at Chikurubi on Saturday.

“In this regard, I am pleased to note that the province managed to make 91 291 arrests, compared to last year’s 79 582.

“Goods worth $5 086 366, 49 and ZAR3 070 were recovered, while at the same time raking in a total of $1 346 474 in revenue,” he said.

Comm-Gen Chihuri said during the year, the Support Unit recovered 18 rifles, 12 pistols, 254 rounds of ammunition, 01 60mm commando mortar, four detonator fuse cables and three mega mite danger explosives.

He said this should be applauded as it sent a clear message to the public of the force’s desire to create an environment conducive for economic growth and empowerment.

Comm-Gen Chihuri said the proliferation of armed robberies in the country was a cause for concern.

“The recent shooting of two police officers in Chipinge is an example of the predatory nature of the new breed of criminals that is slowly emerging in our country. As the police, we will always remain ready to deal with any form of criminal activities in order to guarantee peace and tranquillity in the country,” Comm-Gen Chihuri said.

He said the force should continuously upgrade their digital technologies to improve the quality of service to the people and businesses.

“Given the growing danger of cyber threats, it is imperative that we expand our cooperation on cyber security to protect our critical infrastructure, our businesses and the privacy of our people,” he said.

Officer Commanding Support Unit, Senior Assistant Commissioner Dr Angelina Guvamombe, said the Sub Aqua section attended to 80 drowning cases in which 99 bodies were retrieved.

She said the Support Unit had its own share of problems, which affected its operations.

“Support Unit, being the military wing of the force, its duties span from protection of key and vital installations to border patrols,” Snr Asst Comm Guvamombe said.
