Sibanda for Bosso captaincy Ariel Sibanda

Sports Reporter
GOALKEEPER Ariel Sibanda and defender Peter Mudhuwa have emerged as the favourites, among the Highlanders’ fans, to be named the club captain. The two were the dominant names among the fans of the country’s oldest football club who responded to a poll by The Herald as to who should captain Bosso. Scores of the Highlanders fans responded to the poll.

Highlanders are looking for a new captain after losing Honest Moyo while Gabriel Nyoni, who was the vice-captain, also left the club to join CAPS United. Nyoni led Bosso, in Moyo’s absence, in a number of matches last year.

Highlanders have not won the league championship since their last triumph in 2006 and believe they need a very good leader on the pitch to help them take the giant leap.

Sibanda has become a pillar of strength at Bosso with some fine performances between the posts.

Highlanders will this season have the services of striker Prince Dube who returned to his old club after an unsuccessful stint in South Africa.

Yesterday, Highlanders, for the second time in a week, took to Twitter to discuss the issue of the captaincy.

“In 2006, around this time, we prepared for a journey that will see us lifting the Championship,’’ the club said.

“The club captain was Gilbert Banda. In between we have been changing captains, but the question remains — who will be the next captain to lift the championship after Gilbert Banda?’’

A number of fans responded to that tweet with one saying: “Banda was a true leader, spoke to the players on the pitch, we lack someone who has the authority in the dressing room.’’

Last week, Bosso flighted a similar tweet. “It’s exactly 46 days before the 2019 @CastleLagerPSL season kicks off. We are already into our preseason training,’’ the club said.

“There is, however, a question that needs to be answered. Who do you think will replace Honest Moyo as the club captain?’’ Bruce Kangwa, a former Bosso star, said he would go for Sibanda.

“Long-serving Ariel, 100%,’’ he said.

Eric Mlotshwa said he would also go for the goalkeeper.

“From afar I would go for Ariel Sibanda, he (has) got full view of the game, mature, knows the values of the club inside-outside.’’

Others questioned why it was becoming a tradition that everyone who wears the Bosso armband tends to leave the club the following season.

Those who responded to the poll in this newspaper, said they would settle for either Sibanda, who had the most number of votes, or Muduhwa.
