A school in Denmark is interested in partnering the optometry department at the Bindura University of Science Education to strengthen the quality of education it offers, Vice-Chancellor Professor Eddie Mwenje has said.

Optometry is a specialised health care profession centred on examination of eye defects, ocular diseases and problems related to general health.

He was speaking during the handover ceremony of a donation of optometry equipment and reading glasses at the university last week by Dr Finn Juncer from Denmark, Optinova and Lions Club of Greater Harare.

“I am delighted that a school of optometry in Denmark is interested in partnering us,” said Prof Mwenje. “This means that we will have lecturers coming through, which will strengthen our programme.

“Our gratitude to Dr Juncer for coming all the way from Denmark to assist a large number of Zimbabwe to regain their sight by giving them reading glasses.

‘‘We thank him for extending a hand to the first school of optometry in the country.

“This come at an important time when we have enrolled our first students who are in their first year of studies. You have brought important equipment which will assist students in their development. Not only have you donated equipment for the students but you have empowered our students to reach out and help the community around them.

“Among the equipment are 4 000 pairs of reading glasses and another load is coming through soon. We have assured Dr Juncer that as BUSE we will make sure that the province will benefit at no charge.”

Dr Juncer said the optometry school in Denmark had advanced equipment and was willing to help BUSE School of Optometry.

“I am happy to help the people of Zimbabwe and I am proud that I can help the new school,” said Dr Juncer. “Some of the equipment was donated by the optometry school in Denmark they have more modern equipment

“The school wants to send through some teachers. I hope you can have a meeting about how to connect with the school because they want to come and help you.

“I have brought 4 000 reading glasses donated by a company in Denmark I hope you can help the poor people in your area so that they can read the bible.”
