A local non-governmental organisation, Cheiyo Mikuku Cancer Foundation, has donated three months’ supply of sanitary wear to over 50 rural and disadvantaged girls learning at Rujeko Somalala High School in Zhombe, Gokwe District. The donation, which coincided with the school’s prize-giving ceremony, also saw the girls being trained on the use and safe disposal of the used sanitary wear.

Speaking at the joint handover and prize- giving ceremony recently, Cheiyo Mikuku Cancer Foundation director Laila Makwinya said failure to access sanitary services often resulted in affected girls skipping school, negatively affecting their education.

“The donation came after the realisation that the majority of the rural underprivileged girls had little access to sanitary wear which impacts negatively on their education as they sometimes skip school during their menstruation periods,” she said.

“Children attend school more often when they are healthy, and when they have adequate sanitation facilities.
“Not attending school for several days a month or more over a year can have a huge (negative) impact on the quality of education a girl receives and on whether she completes her education at all.”
