HARARE’s dormitory town of Ruwa is facing a number of challenges including waste management, and sewer reticulation, a development that threatens potential health risks.

The town discharges raw sewage into a local river due to lack of sewer ponds.

Further, Ruwa contends with water woes amid reports that Nora Dam, which supplies water into the town, is left with only a month’s supply.

Ruwa Local Board chairperson Mr Kizito Chivafa has pleaded for help to alleviate the situation.

“We have challenges of waste and sewer reticulation system and the farm which we had indicated to the Ministry (of Local Government) to give us to work on the project is up there (Epworth side) and l hope the Minister (Cde July Moyo) will understand the challenges that may affect residents,” he said.

“We may have health hazards like typhoid and cholera because those who say it their land have since reported but we have nowhere to dump our solid waste and that is where we are dumping since we have no choice.

“We for anywhere else but we are pleading with the relevantministry for assistance we have since written a letter to them and we are still waiting for response.”

Ruwa town secretary Mr Kumbirai Madanhi weighed in saying there was need of urgent redress of the challenges, which which threaten the well-being of residents.

“We have been putting pressure to our Ministry of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing as well as the Ministry of Lands on the issue of giving us more land and they are yet to respond to our request,” he said.

Ruwa has about 20 000 housing units and an estimated population of 120 000 people.
