Runde Rural District Council will engage Murowa Diamonds on their road maintenance partnership deal, which is targeting the Mazvihwa area. The council is facing difficulties in maintaining roads as ZINARA is not releasing funds to rehabilitate roads which were damaged by the rains last season. Officials recently noted that the deal with Murowa Diamonds entailed the company providing fuel for road maintenance in the Mazvihwa area, while council provided equipment and technical expertise.

“However, the committee was concerned that the deal was only covering the Mazvihwa area, leaving out the rest of the district. It was, therefore, proposed that the issue be taken up with the mine,” read a report from a recent council meeting.

Runde RDC chief executive Mr Gorden Moyo said owing to the challenges they were facing, they had decided to find their own means to fund such projects. It was further reported that ZINARA had only released $20 600 for the emergency road works carried out this year and the money had already been used up.

Council had been allocated $224 332 to be accessed through interim payment certificates. The minutes further noted that; “periodic works had been completed in Guruguru and Mhondongori and were still to be completed in Ward 19. ZINARA was yet to release funds to pay for the stages done in Ward 19 roads in order for the contractor to do the next stages.” It said the Venge-Mavhuramashava Road had not been included under periodic works after ZINARA indicated that the road was to be treated as a special project. Other major road works in the district include the Siboza-Pakame roads were still awaiting the release of funds.
