Masvingo Provincial Affairs Minister Senator Josaya Hungwe has expressed concern over delays on the Beitbridge-Harare Highway dualisation project, saying people are now restless.

According to Geiger International country representative, Dr Cuthbert Mashanda, the long-awaited project would commence before the end of this month.

He called on the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development to treat the project with the urgency it deserved.

“People in Masvingo are worried over the continued delay in the commencement of the $1,7 billion Beitbridge-Harare Highway dualisation project,” said Senator Hungwe. “The dates have been continuously changed and people are losing hope.”

Senator Hungwe said his office was in undated with inquiries as potential sub-contractors wanted to check on progress.

A four member delegation led by Dr Mashanda and the provincial road Engineer Arnold Jeme last Wednesday visited Exor Garage, about two kilometres from the city centre along the Masvingo-Beitbridge Highway, where Geiger plans to set up its headquarters.

They also visited the Masvingo-Bulawayo turn off where a fly over will be constructed and Neshuro Growth Point in Mwenezi where another camp would be set up.

“Good road network remains key to socio-economic development of the country and plays an important role in movement of goods and reduction of road carnages.

The Beitbridge-Harare and Harare-Chirundu highways have claimed a lot of lives through road traffic accidents.
