From George Maponga in Masvingo
RESIDENTS have petitioned Masvingo City Council demanding that action be taken against two councillors who defrauded the municipality of $800 in the run-up to harmonised elections last year.

The residents, comprising mainly youths, gathered at the Civic Centre where council had a meeting. They want MDC-Alliance councillors Daniel Mberikunashe (Ward 5) and Godfrey Kurauone (Ward 4) charged for swindling council.

The two under fire councillors allegedly claimed travelling allowances amounting to $800 on the pretext they were going on council business.

They used the resources to attend MDC-Alliance rallies in Chiredzi and Mwenezi.

Councillors Mberikunashe and Kurauone were re-elected on July 30.

Masvingo Deputy Mayor Councillor Wellington Mahwende confirmed there were disturbances at the Civic Centre when a full council meeting was underway.

“There were disturbances outside council chambers on the day in question and the situation involved some residents who had an issue which they want council to look into. They sent their message and went away but I am not in a position to talk much about their issue because it is still to be tabled before council,” said Cllr Mahwende.

Masvingo Provincial Affairs Minister Cde Ezra Chadzamira recently confirmed receiving complaints over the same matter.
