President Mugabe’s address at luncheon for MPs
President R.G Mugabe

President R.G Mugabe

NHENGO dzePolitburo dziri pano VaChairman vedu, Secretary for administration, maService chiefs, nhengo dzeparty dziri pano, our brand new ministers, and their brand new deputies, maDzishe vachitungamirirwa naShe vedu VaCharumbira, vana Baba nanaMai, all our business people who are here drawn from various business sectors, vose maWar Veterans, War Collaborators, vanaChimbwido and the brand new Members of Parliament who cannot be brand new ministers, ladies and gentleman, comrades and friends.

This do has become a traditional one. Is an event which follows the opening of Parliament? It is meant by Local Government as an event for them to entertain us, feed us and enable us perhaps to reminisce throw our minds into the past, immediate past, look at the present moment and see what our requirements are, and cast our minds also into the future and have that perspective, therefore, so that we are not just of today, we are also people of yesterday that is why we are still here and hope to be people of tomorrow with limitations of course as to our ability to fix the timeframe that we still have.

Tinoda kutenda zvikuru kukutendesesai nekuvhotera kwamakaita, nebasa ramakaita guru guru, it was a real, real vigorous campaign and the result as we saw, was also a resounding one.

And tinoti makorokoto, tinoda kutenda vanhu, the grassroots. We are grassroots people ndiko kwatakabva, ndokune zvichemo zvatatiendesa mumajeri, ndokune zvichemo zvatakarisana nazvo zvedu tose kwazvo kwazvo, zvevanhu vedu the ordinary people.

Muchitarisa, the nature of the vote and its policy of strength and policy of weakness, it is the grassroots who gave the strongest Yes tinoda the party that saw us, the weakest support came from those who are in fact the better people in terms of their style of living, way of life, better housing, they are more intellectual than the rural ones, more discerning, more judgmental but alas, less supportive of their own sovereignty.

Something wrong somewhere. Hameno kuti chii chirwere chacho? The more we become highly intelligent, highly educated, better placed in life, the less perhaps, we think of our origins, the less we think of the poor, the less we even have, defensive mechanisms around what we are and want we have achieved because the enemy normally comes into our situation, they are imperialists using the more sophisticated, the more educated, the more discerning, we are the ones who fall prey and become sellouts. We the ones who are sponsored by the enemy.

The enemy doesn’t go into the rural areas first into where the traditional leaders are first, no, he comes here, we have workers here, civil servants here, the labour movement here, thats what he did as the British former ruler in the form of the trinity of Consecutives party, the Labour party and the Liberal party decide that they wanted to intervene and change the course, revolution course that we had charted.

They came in here and extracted those of us who had a better life here, the labour movement and formed the party that does not understand what democracy means, which says democracy means the right for it, exclusive right for it to win, and if any other party wins, no! there was some rigging because no other party has the right to win in terms of democracy ideology on that party, quite strange so tisu and those are not people who did not know what they were doing they knew they were leading workers and so they had quite some element of intelligence

But when that intelligence is diverted and taken advantage of and gets swayed and you are made suicidal then something is wrong with you and all we have set our people is that they are themselves, they are us ordained by the Almighty owners of their resources, owners of their land, they own themselves, they have the right to determine their future.

No one else from outside has the right to say part of Zimbabwe belongs to them; the resources of Zimbabwe belong to them. No! That’s simple, simple ideology. It is understood by our people. Nyika ndeyedu, umhlaba wethu and there is no magic in that, there was no witchcraft, it’s just that understanding.

MDC-T secretary-general Tendai Biti, organising secretary Nelson Chamisa and party leader Morgan Tsvangirai engrossed in the Zanu-PF manifesto before addressing a campaign rally

You people on the other side are saying not what we believe but what others believe. You are spokesmen for others, you are not therefore our own spokesmen. You are traitors. That’s what the people are saying, that’s why the MDC lost because its treacherous policies can never be accepted by the people and of course what the people believe in, simple as it is, is also a divine order, a divine gift that the Almighty gave us, that’s why those who are faithful to the Almighty pray to the Almighty saying they own countries, preserve our right of ownership make our way of life enjoyable on this earth but cognisant also of the fact that we are together, we are not selfish that there are certain rules that we must obey but fundamentally what you gave us is our own.

Tanzwa munamato waPastor Chigovera ndati kwandiri ah ah vanzi vanamatire kudya ndikati havo, havo ndikati vaivepi patanga tiri kucampaign, vakanga vakahwandepi? Tavaziva iye zvino imiwe, ndochokwadi chiripo.

Hatina kuzofunga sadza, ndivo vatozoti nesu, ndikati nesu. Ndozvatinoda zvino vamwe vaiti ah tinofanirwa kukudza vakanga vakatigara matumba, “Rule Britania, Britain rule the world,’’ ndizvo zvataifundiswa kuchikoro, “Britain will never, never ever will be Britain . . .”, Britain will never, ever will be slaves,’’ if they were ‘never, ever to be slaves?’ what they ever, ever to be? Masters. Ok of whom? Hapoka!

Isu tichiimba, kuzviimbira kuti tive maslaves.
Aaah chavakanatsa ndeche kungozouya nefundo yekuti tive neruzivo rwokuti ah ndozvari izvi. Mwari wavanonamata havachamunamata.

Vakunzvenga even maCommandments, love your neighbours. Havana kana chido. Vanokunyeperai, they want to be superiors all the time, if you can’t recognise they are superiors, they want to force it on you by hook or by crook. If you deny them the resources they will find their way of getting the resources from you.

diamondsmarch18So be careful, your diamonds, your gold, your chrome, your iron, your resources generally. Sure we kicked them out of here as land masters because it was obviously land they had taken, was a robbery that deprived us of our ownership of it and we had to fight for it. But don’t sit on your laurels and think they are gone.

Never, never, never sit on your laurels. Look at they are trying to do. Lies, mopomerwa mhaka. International law must be subverted. Even Blair says no, international law aside.

‘The United Nations might agree or disagree’, says Bush, ‘I will go to Iraq. This man they call Saddam Hussein he has Weapons of Massive Destruction we can’t allow that in the world! Massive destruction? and call Saddam, how could he destroy the masses of this world. He has sworn that he was telling the truth. He goes, Bush says ‘yes, what you swear to I also swear to. I pledge, therefore, to be your follower’.

So bound by that lie, the two of them led the other insignificant ones into Iraq but they were the significant front runners. And when they had gotten rid of the man. Knowing there were no Weapons of Mass Destruction at the end of it, No.

He had Weapons of Mass Destruction. Meanwhile they were draining his oil. Bush, his brother, his company sucking oil and then they admitted, no there were no Weapons of Mass Destruction but they knew this in advance they had told a lie.

sarkozy_gaddafiPoor Gaddafi, even against our advice, they said good friends. That Lockerbie thing, with the payments, ah. His advisors, he had sent some of his kids to European schools, Britain, they were saying if we can pay off what they are claiming the chance now open to us if we can sell more oil we will gain what we lost in the past because of the sanctions. And they paid, opened themselves up to visits from vanaBlair, the Sarkozys and others who wanted money for their campaigns, they came. Even Berlusconi had a moment to forget his prostitutes and come.

So indeed, they joined forces eventually. Britain was sending its own intelligence people, MI6. And Gaddafi says they now want, wanted to help him establish himself in a better way, in a more secure way not knowing no, they were throwing their eyes afar wanting to see where the strength lay?

Wanting to hear who among them were the strongest supporters and who were the weakest. They then instigated a group in Benghazi, close to the Mediterranean, the second largest town, a group to start something. Oh there was a rebellion now where the group was saying he is killing civilians. Lies, so it could end there in Britain and America. ‘Yes he is killing civilians, United Nations give us a chance, give us the right to go and protect the civilians who are at the mercy of Gaddafi,’ and that was completely untrue.

He was not killing civilians, and even some of our African countries representing Africa (in the Security Council), three of them South Africa, Nigeria and Gabon voted with Europe to give them majority, two thirds majority under Chapter 7 of the (UN) Charter.

So now under Chapter 7, they could, come using NATO when the hands of Gaddafi were tied, he was not allowed to use his aircraft at all and they came in the name of saving civilians. No, they were coming in, in the name of draining oil, getting rid of Gaddafi and we saw them hound the family, harass the family, seek Gaddafi and went on to kill him eventually.

They killed some members of the family, managed to get rid of Gaddafi and then, they started sharing the oil we heard that Italy was given 35 percent, they didn’t mention the other percentages.

They now wanted to invade Syria, and this time it was the man we have not critised at all in America because he has some of our blood. But he has decided to respect more, the blood from his mother than that from his father. He has not visited Kenya where his father came from.

I suppose if his predecessors have shone “vakashaina nekuenda kuhondo, iye zuva rake rabudawoka kana rabuda shaina.’’ Ndozvavari kuita.

Cameroon before him akashaina nekuenda kunoparadza kanyika kadiki ako, so how can you be a leader of a strong nation without having shown it militarily.

So this is what all these young people are up to, so we must take care. Kuno we must thank our neighbors, they actually wanted to attack us. What for? Aah because the people here were under a dictatorship. So they said no, and they actually asked our neighbours to send troops. They said no, they did not. So there it is.

And I am emphasizing this because the strength of a Government depends on the unity of its people . We thought as we moved on from 2008 in the Government of Nation Unity we were actually, you know, educating each other. Win or lose we say we want to accept the results of the election. Let’s work on peace as we agreed on the Organ that will champion the cause of peace and not violence generally.

That apparently has not worked very much with our partners in the GNU. They thought, for one reason or the other, although the signs were there, that they were not going to win but I don’t know how their judgment goes. Surely they should have known even three years ago, that with policies that deny people inputs in Agriculture you are denying even the sustenance of companies and there is great unemployment, growing all the time. You get money from the IMF, half a billion dollars, 500 million when all countries that got their money put it into development, during those hard times when the economies of great countries like America were shaking and we only got 500 million, half a billion and we thought it was going to be injected into our industry to sustain our industry and make them more resilient and more resistant to sanctions but we don’t know where the money was put up to this day.

So maCompanies muBulawayo, unemployment everywHere chose, chose chabatwa it’s half done, or done in a negative way and so it’s just negatives, negatives. And if you just have a policy of negatives, negatives against your people. Well, you know you are building up resounding punishment. The people are punitive in their own way and they have shown it.

Minister Made

Minister Made

Well, we managed to open our Parliament today. We announced roughly what would be our people oriented policies, Never have policies that hurt your people. what are you there for? We used to say every week VaMade, nyangwe vainzi vari kutadza, but many of us who knew the fight he was fighting every week and the reports he was giving us in Cabinet ‘kuti batsirai mafarmers even chibage chokudya chaicho nekuti kune nzara, ngatibhadharei. Kune varikuhoda things from SA, the shelves are full and so on, What! What! Kind of an economy is that which strives on imports even of consumer goods. Mbatata, potatoes yet we grow them here, nomukaka wese, vaMugabe vatovewo neDairy muno, they go and buy not just powder milk but fresh milk, and we are ready to be a cattle ranching country. We in fact used to have a protocol with EC, EU; 1200 dze beef a day dzavaida beef redu, we used also to go outside to Zambia and Malawi to establish ourselves there, No! all this sadly now is dying and dying, we have few areas where we have dairy companies.

So it’s not just farming, it’s the industry and its mining also, some people they say there has been that shroud on mining, we want to reorganize it. Organize, it in a manner which ensures that we know precisely what we are getting from diamonds, we know precisely what we are getting from platinum and there is value addition along the way. So let not the companies continue to cheat us and continue to say we cannot establish a refinery of platinum because hatina maproducts akakwana. Hatidi kuramba tichinzwa izvozvo. So sell our product to South Africa kwatisingaone zvirikuitwa ikoko why?, What is our benefit even our gold, mufunge? Zvakanga zvonzi no! the monopoly of the Reserve Bank to buy gold, lets liberalise it so vanhu vanga vakutengesa gold pa South Africa and to go and make it refined in South Africa that has got to stop, we are going, hatidi kuzvinzwa, we have a refinery which is established, even new machinery came to Fidelity kuReserve Bank. So we are going to take measures.

Obviously kune wamwe vanoita prosper and thrive on importation of cheap goods from South Africa but when you import you are sending money there it’s a loss on our side you may as a individual or individuals vana kana mai kana muri imi muri kuita prosper but the country is being drained and we want our GDP to reflect properly what we export and what we import. And the balance gore negore tione kuti takwirira here?

What is coming from agriculture, what is coming from industry what is coming from mining?
And how are we performing kuma communications edu vanaEconet vanaTelecel vana NetOne etc.

We know that Econet, Masiyiwa established it, fine. But when it was established we also said we had to establish another system for our communities and that’s how Telecel was established apart from what NetOne was going to do. And Telecel was to take our war veterans, it was to take our other groups madzimai vanaMutasa, vakabatana mazuva acho vaiva vakabatana, mamwe magroups, vakabatana. VananaLeo vakanga vaitawo yavo yemumba, pamabrothers pavo vese ivava vakapinda mairi initially vanana Chiyangawa vaive . . . I am forgetting what was it? Affirmative Action Group, vaive varimo mukati imomo maKamba arimowo mukati imomo so what happened is, uyu was a cunning guy Makamba, wainzi bhadharai watadza kubhadhara votsveterwa wotengesa iye oona mashares akawanda eventually, Chiyangwa akaona kuti hazvigone akatengesa but then you see Chiyangwa is a speculative character you see.

phillipchiyangwaHe wants cash all the time but Gushungo zvakazomuwana muChinhoyi.
Zvakamuwana kuChinhoyi zvainzi ndiri kuhwina straight kokushainaka, rabudaka zuva iri, Gushungo, Gushungo ah chairman, okay vasuppotwa paye zvikanzi ah ndiri kuhwina, ndiri kuhwinha. Chiendai kumaelection and in the whole of Mashonaland West Gushungo ndivo vakati mbombombo. Zvino ndakanzwa navaChombo vachiti zuva iroro haana kusvimha misodzi asi akanorara nebhutsu. Hauvhaire kuti ndine zvakati ndine zvakati, be down, don’t show off mari handiyo inoshanda all the time. So zvinoita, saka tinoda kubata basa nemazvo, we must work for the people I know iye zvino it’s not easy because economy yanga yadzika unemployment is on the rise, povetry is on the rise, there is hunger, tinoda kutenda zvikuru that aspect. Ndakushorai zvangu vemuno mumadhorobha asi ndinoda kukupraiser iwo pakuti netumari twatinobhadhara maworkers civil servants, whether you are in the public sector or private sector. Our uniforms identify the kids, and they are proud to be in their uniform, and it adds really to a certain personal pride and group pride and also the pride of the school.

So no it’s a characteristic we cannot drop, no, never, let’s keep that. But then it’s a cost, it’s not the only cost. Ko magetsi, ko mvura?
Taizviona, maizviita sei, taizvinona. My wife runs a garden pamba. Mapotatoes zvese, vadakadai vakatipa system yavo, the drip system yekuIsrael you know, we don’t even have to demand kuti vatiisire kufarm, pamba chaipo.

It does cost money to have a good garden. We know of course the majority of the cases, vana mai vari kutambura, vana mai vanotengesa kuMbare kuMusika who sustain kuMusika tinoda kuvatenda.

VanaBaba kana Chibuku mazuva acho kuti uti uyu chake, uyu chake, zvanga zvisagoneke.
So we are looking at all that. We will have to ensure that ma resources, we get quick resources, from the areas where we get them, the mining area, the agricultural area and see whether these resources will enable us to make a quick go because we must remedy, remedy the condition of our people. But tinoda kutenda makashingirira, vana vakaramba vari muzvikoro.

There were some drop-outs we know but nothing really on a large scale. We want again to build your capacity, the capacity of the workers, the skills you have, and we are glad we have maintained our training, the skills you have, you are able to operate and get home with US$200 zvorevei izvozvo?

We are sorry about that, it could not be avoided. But we are also grateful for the understanding, the support that you gave to your country, to your Government.
