PPE boost for prisons

The Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission (ZHRC) in partnership with Zimbabwe Association of Doctors for Human Rights (ZADHR) has donated an assortment of personal protective clothing and water tanks to Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) at Harare Central Prison.

The donation, made on Tuesday, contributes to the prevention and containment of Covid-19 in prisons in line with section 194(1)(g) of the Constitution, which requires institutions and agencies of the Government to cooperate with each other. 

The goods, which comprised of four 5 000-litre water tanks, four water pumps and fittings, 20 infra-red thermometers, 16 boxes of surgical face masks, 1 200 reusable branded face masks, 80 face shields, 80 boxes of latex gloves, 800 single units of soap and 400 units of 500ml hand sanitiser were handed over to ZPCS Deputy Commissioner-General Social Ndanga.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, Dep Comm-Gen Ndanga said the donation will go a long way in the continued fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.

ZHRC executive secretary, Ms Delis Mazambani, said; “Some of the recommendations made by the ZHRC, especially during this period of the prevailing Covid-19 pandemic, related to the need to improve the availability of water in prisons as well as the need to ensure adequate provision of PPE to both inmates and correctional officers,” she said.
