Police decry surge in robberies, machete attacks

Midlands Bureau
Police have bemoaned an increase in machete attacks and robberies in Kwekwe, saying they will descend heavily on the perpetrators.

Speaking during an anti-machete and crime-free campaign in Kwekwe on Monday, Midlands provincial police spokesperson Inspector Joel Goko said the police were in full force to restore sanity in the gold mining city.

There have been intermittent fights among artisanal miners in Kwekwe, with rival camps attacking each other with machetes and knobkerries at will.

Police in Kwekwe launched anti-machete campaigns, visiting all shopping centres which of late have become the major crime scenes, while engaging the public to refrain from engaging in crimes.

Insp Goko, who was leading the campaign, said the increase in the cases of robberies and unlawful entries have been a cause for concern in the city.

“As police, we are worried by the increase in violence cases, especially involving dangerous weapons,” he said.

“Our duty is to maintain peace. We have, therefore, decided to embark on this awareness campaign where we engage the public and spell to them the dangers of using dangerous weapons.”

Insp Goko said the campaign was reaching out to drinking spots where the crimes were being committed.
