THE annual National Association of School Heads chess championship started in earnest at Chipindura High school in Bindura with over 250 taking to the chess board yesterday.

The schools’ chess tournament caters for students across all the ten provinces with the Under-15 to Under-20 age groups for both boys and girls.

NASH head of chess Elijah Mazula said he is happy with the way the tournament began and it is fully subscribed as all provinces managed to send representatives.

“We are happy that we are hosting our annual NASH schools’ chess championship at Chipindura High School in Bindura, Mashonaland Central. The tournament give students chances to showcase their talents and get an opportunity to represent the country.

“We managed to draw participants from all the ten provinces and they have each a team of 28 players who range from the Under-15 to the Under-20.

“After last year’s tournament hosted by Midlands Province at Cheziya High School there is so much improvement as we have some teachers, heads and students in attendance. 

“We will have the official opening today (yesterday) and the tournament curtain will come down on Monday where we will have individual and provincial prize presentations,” said Mazula.

The tournament is expected to be competitive as it has the ticket to represent the country.

“The tournament promises to be a thrilling showcase of wit and genius as the best young chess players from schools across the nation compete for the ultimate glory of their schools and provinces.

“We are looking forward to an intense and exciting competitions we are grateful to the commitment from schools and provinces in making this championship a resounding success as well as their determination to grow our chess in the country,” added Mazula.
